How to Move Developments to Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Test and Live Environments? 1- Developing and Sending to Azure DevOps.

In this article, I will try to explain how to move the developments we made from Visual Studio for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations to Test and Live environments. I thought of wrapping it up in a single article, but I realized it would be too long so I divided it into sections. In this first article, we will make a new development and compile it, then we will do the first tests in our development environment, and finally, we will send our development to Azure DevOps. In the other articles of this series, I will explain how to Build in Azure DevOps and how to move the package to test and live environments.

Let’s have a look at our example. I will write a simple class and make an information screen appear when it is run. Then I’ll create a MenuItem and connect it to the Menu. In my previous articles, we created the DmrWMS model and the DMRWms1 project. I will use this project. Right click on the project and click Add New Items. Select Class as its type, name it and click Add.

I added the following codes to the class. It has a very simple structure. I made it work on its own with Main. I gave an Info in the Run method.

Now let’s create the Menu Item that is necessary to run our class and add it to the menu. Select Action Menu Item from the Add New Items section, name it and click Add.

Select the Object Type Class from the resulting Menu Item properties. Select the class you created as Object. Do not forget to set Label as it will appear in the menu.

Let’s test the development now. Right click on the project and click Build.

If Build is completed without any errors, mark the Menu Item we created as Set as Startup Object and run it by clicking Start.

It called the Menu Item class and displayed the notification on the screen. Our code works J

Now we can add it to a menu. Since I want to add it to a standard menu, I must use Extension. I will explain the Extension logic in my next articles, but here you can think of it as an extension of the standard object. You can add new things without breaking the standard. I created an Extension of the AcountsPayable menu with the Create extension option, as shown in the picture.

I drag and drop my own Menu Item under PeriodicTask to the resulting menu.

I Build my project again and run it.  Build Test appears in the menu. Our development is almost ready to send to version control. Normally it is necessary to add security related objects here. I’m skipping them for now.

I click Team Explorer-> Panding Changes.

I should see all the objects I’ve created. If there is something missing, I need to add it with Add to Source Control. If you have followed me here, it will automatically add when the object is created. I add a comment and click Check In.

I click Yes to complete the process.

When I check my Azure DevOps project, I can see all my objects. I am now ready to run Build.

In this article, we have made the initial preparation to move developments to test and live environments. We created a simple project, performed the first tests and sent it to Azure DevOps. After this stage, if I had a Dev Branch, I had to perform Merge first. But in our example, since we work directly with main, we are ready to start Build. I will talk about how to perform Merge later.

How to Change the Default Model for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Developments?

When you install a new DevBox for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, the default model is Fleet Management. If you create a new model, you can mark it as the default model while creating it. However, to use an existing model, it is necessary to make changes to the DynamicsDevConfig file.

In my previous articles, I created the DmrWMS model and marked it as the default model. Therefore, my every new project opens in the DmrWMS model.

I have two models in this environment. If I want to work on the other model, unfortunately I cannot choose it while creating the project.

As you can see, it is not possible to choose a model in the new project creation screen, or I could not find it. Of course I did some research.

To change this, it is necessary to open the DynamicsDevConfig file in C:\Users\Adminb17ce65567\Documents\Visual Studio 2015\Settings.  You must go to this path with your own user. Adminb17ce65567 is my auto-generated admin user. That is the user I connect with Remote Desktop. You can find very useful information in the DynamicsDevConfig file. Let’s go over these 3 features for now.

In this article, I tried to explain how you can change the default model with the DynamicsDevConfig file. It is imperative to work with the model and it is necessary to set up the model management correctly and make sure that the software developers develop the right model. It becomes troublesome to fix them later.

How to Set Up Azure DevOps Connection via Visual Studio in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Development Environment?

In this article, I will talk about what needs to be done after creating a new development environment. The first step is to log into Visual Studio. Then, I will explain how to connect to the Azure DevOps project. I intend to summarize the steps to be taken before starting development in a few articles.

In these installations, I will use the development environment we built on Azure. I explained how to deploy a development environment in my previous articles. Once the machine is deployed, you can download and connect Remote Desktop connection information via LCS. Currently Visual Studio 2015 comes installed, but there will be a migration to new versions of Visual Studio soon. Visual Studio must be opened with Run as administrator. For convenience, right click on Visual Studio and click Pin to taskbar.

Right click on the Visual Studio icon in the task bar and click Properties

Click Advanced from the screen that opens. Check Run as administrator and click OK. This eliminates the need to do this every time you open it. Also, if you forget this, some functions do not work, and you will waste time.

We need to Sign in with an account authorized for Visual Studio.

I use an account created for this project.

Software developers like to use Dark themes, but I use the classic theme because I have difficulty reading on dark screen.

If there is no problem with your user’s authorization, your login will be completed. Dynamics 365 menu is available. I will talk about the menus here in my next articles. Now open the Team Explorer screen.

Open the connection page with the Manage Connections link.

Nothing appears in the Select a Team Foundation Server section. The reason for this is that the user login I used to connect to Visual Studio is not authorized for the Azure DevOps project that we connect to LCS.

Open the Azure DevOps project and invite the user to the project by clicking Invite.  Of course, you must log in with an authorized user in Azure DevOps. Since I have the information of the Admin account, I logged in with it.

When I type my username from the search, it automatically appears. I select and add it.

Also, since I want to have Admin rights in this project, I add my user to the Administrators section as shown in the picture.

When I looked back to Visual Studio, I could see my project. To do this, you need to restart Visual Studio. Refreshing doesn’t work.

When you click Connect, you will be connected to your Azure DevOps project. You will see the link under Visual Studio Team Services as shown below.

In this article, I talked about the initial settings required for a new Devbox. First of all, it is very important to open Visual Studio with admin rights. It is often forgotten, so I explained how to make a definition to automate it. Then, we established the connection to our Azure DevOps project, which is required for the version control of our application. Now we can move on to the other settings. How to set up the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Help system?

In this article, I will explain how to set up and use the Help system for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. We usually perform this set up for test and live environments. I’ll show it on a test environment.

First, log into the test environment and open the System Management->Settings->System parameters screen.

Open the help window. If you are opening it for the first time, a warning window appears and tells you to connect to the LCS project. If you have opened it before and you have not established the connection like me, you can choose it as follows. You may have more than one project, but it is useful to choose the project which you created this environment on.

After selecting it, standard Task guide libraries will appear. You can add via LCS and choose from here. Select the LCS project for support as well.

After these steps, the help setup is ready. Now you can click ? And open the help screen.

If you are not in a form, a screen like the one below will open.

Since our environment is in Turkish, help is displayed in Turkish. You can also set it to be displayed in different languages.

If you open it from a form, related topics will appear. Since I opened the Help screen through the all customers form, the related topics were listed.

How to Create a Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Support Case?

In this article, I will show you how you can open a support case via Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations and access automatically-generated support records via LCS and Azure DevOps.

First, some basic setups need to be made. In my previous articles, I explained how to setup Help. If you follow the setups there, you can create a support case without having to do anything else. When you click the question mark and click Support, if you have not installed, the LCS connection screen will appear.

You can click the link and establish the connection. It will be connected without entering any information here.

When the connection is successful, the following screen will appear. You can now create a support case.

Click on the question mark again and click Support.

On the screen that opens, you can enter many details about your support case. First, enter the title and description of the issue.  You can create a task record and add it here. If there is a file log, you can add it. You can indicate if the issue prevents you from working. The more details provided here, the easier the solution will be.

For Send to be active, you have to click Yes for the email notification. Then, when you click Send, the following screen will appear.

The support case you created will be sent as follows.

To view the support request you created on LCS, open your project and click Support.

The support case you created appears in the support issues section. You can follow the actions from here. Also, a Work Item has been created in Azure DevOps. You can open Azure DevOps Work Item record by clicking directly on the support case name.

You can also see the support case you created in Azure DevOps. From here, you can follow the necessary steps to solve it.

In this article, I tried to explain how to enter a new support case and view it via LCS and Azure DevOps. Support has always been a painful process for business applications. It’s not easy to get users who just take a screenshot of the error and post it to enter detailed support cases. However, this mechanism will reduce the IT workload and make it easier to track. For this reason, it’s best to encourage business units to use this place. For example, support cases entered here can be prioritized and resolved quickly.

How to make new mobile forms on Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations web forms?

In this article, I will try to explain how to generate new mobile forms from Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations forms. In my previous article, I explained how to publish standard mobile screens and how to install Dynamics 365 Mobile App on mobile devices.

In this example, we will make a very simple listing screen. I selected the all products form as an example. Open the Product information managment -> All products and product master form.

Click on the Mobile app from the settings icon.

Click the ellipsis icon from the form that opens and click Create.

Enter the information of the mobile form you want to create. Then add a page by clicking Add page.

When you click Done, the page creation screen opens.  Here, click Select fields to open the screen where you can select the fields you want.

Select the fields by clicking the + icons.

I added two fields. After finishing the process, click Back and return to the first page.

You see the page you created on this screen. You can create multiple pages.  Continue the process by clicking Done.

Id is created here. Complete your mobile worksheet by clicking Save.

You can now see it in the list. Publish it by clicking Publish. You will now be able to see the product list form from the application on your phone.

In this article, I tried to explain how you can create mobile forms from any form. I exemplified it with a very simple form, but you can do it with forms with more complex data entries. How to Install and Use Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations Mobile App?

In this article, I will talk about the Mobile app feature that comes with Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. With Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, there are many mobile applications that come as standard. You can create new applications, and you can make the existing forms suitable for mobile. I will also explain new mobile application creation process in the following articles. In this article, I will publish a few applications and try to show them through the application I installed on my Android phone.

First, log in to Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. Click Mobile app from the settings.

Available mobile apps will be listed.  You can select the ones you want and Publish.

For Android, search for Microsoft Finance and Operations (Dynamics 365) in the Google Play Store, search for Finance and Operations (Dynamics 365) in the App Store for Apple and install the application. I installed it on Android.

After the installation is complete, open the application. Enter the link of the environment you want to connect to and click Connect.

Here you need to grant permissions.

You have to check I Understand and tap Connect. You will need to enter the user and password on the screen that appears.

The application is ready. First let’s select a company. Click on Change company from the hamburger menu.

Companies will be listed here. Dat is not used because it is the default company. Here you can select the company you want to work with.

When you go to the workspace, you will see the applications you Published. You can now start using it. I opened the Project Time Entry application.

Once you enter it, a new login page link appears.

When you click it, the date selection screen opens. I opened the screen for creating a new record with New Entry below.

This is the new record entry screen. Records entered here will appear directly in your Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations environment. Since I do not want to corrupt the data in the environment I use, I did not log in.

How to set up Azure Auto-shutdown for your Dynamics 365 Cloud Hosted machines?

With Dynamics 365, we met Developer VMs and since they work on a pay-as-you-go logic, they must be closed when you are not working with them. Especially in projects where multiple software developers are working, it is useful to arrange the virtual machine opening and closing in order to avoid problems in terms of cost and time management. In this article, I will explain the Auto-Shutdown feature that comes with Azure. I will also talk about a product you can use for more advanced adjustments.

First, let’s talk about Azure Auto-shutdown. This feature allows you to automatically shut down your virtual machines at a certain time every day. It also allows you to take special action with notification emails. Let’s take a quick look at how to set up and get notifications.

Enter the Azure Portal and choose your virtual machine. Click on Auto-shutdown from the menu.

On the page that opens, we set the Enabled section to On.  Select the time and time zone you want it to turn off. Send notification before auto-shutdown? This is very useful. Sometimes it is necessary to work overtime, or a process that you run takes a long time. In such cases, notification and postponement links in the notification make it easier. You can send these notifications to a service over a web with Webhook URL. I have never used this. I usually use the Email Address. You can add as many e-mails as you want with semicolons. After completing the definitions, you can save them by clicking Save.

When it’s time to shut down, you will receive an email like the one below. Using the links, you can postpone it for 1 or 2 hours, or skip it for once.

As the name suggests, Auto-shutdown does not have a mechanism to open the virtual machine, it only performs shutdown. You can use the Start/Stop VMs during off-hours option in Azure Marketplace for this.

It tells you what you need when you open it and how to activate it. Just start with Create and follow the steps. It has a simple setup, so I will not go through it step by step. Thanks to this tool, you can turn off/turn on your VMs at any time. For example, if the work starts at 9:00, it would make sense to open it at 8:30.

In this article, I talked about the Azure Auto-shutdown tool used to automatically shut down your virtual machines and the Start/Stop VMs during off-hours tool that can also do a turn on operation. It is beneficial to build these tools well in order to manage costs effectively.

How to give Dynamics Deployment Services Account authorization to Microsoft Azure Subscription in order to deploy Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations?

In this article, I will describe step by step how to authorize Dynamics Deployment Services Account, which is necessary to deploy a new environment via LCS. First, log into Azure Portal with the Admin account. Open Cost Management +Billing > Subscriptions.

Select the subscription you want to authorize and click on Access control (IAM) from the screen that opens.

Open the new role definition window by clicking on Add> Add role assignment.

In the window that opens, select Contributor as Role. In the Assign Access to section, select Azure AD user, group, or service principal. When you type Dynamics in the Select section, the options will be automatically available. From there, select Dynamics Deployment Services [wsfed-enabled] and click save.

When the process is completed, you will see the information below.

In this article, I tried to explain how the Dynamics Deployment Services Account is authorized over Azure, which is one of the necessary steps to deploy a new environment. This step is usually skipped and an error is received in the Deploy operation over LCS. It is useful to give this authorization beforehand.
